The Vestry: Stewards of the Parish and Faithful Leaders
A Vestry is the agent and legal representative of the Parish in all matters concerning its corporate property and its relationship of the parish to its clergy.
VESTRY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Explicitly seek God's guidance.
- Seek means to form community.
- Act in concert with the Rector.
- Seek to discern, with the Rector, what the parish is called to do and to have oversight of that work.
- Define its own mission, vision, values and goals.
- Be attentive to the concrete. Form a committee to fix problems, setting strict time limits and moving on to the rest of the Church's life.
- Hold one's self and one another accountable.
- Celebrate, bonding and supporting with one another through celebratory events.
- Hold formal and meaningful rituals, because we are a liturgical church.
- Seek continuity and embrace change.
- Note: Scott Evenbeck, Dean of the University College at Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis, defines Vestry Responsibilities. He is also a long-standing deputy to the General Convention.
Eight different committees serve the Vestry. The Worship Committee, for one, is responsible for the following:
