What is Shrove Tuesday-
Shrove Tuesday is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent, which begins the following day on Ash Wednesday. Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter, was traditionally a time of fasting, and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were shriven of their sins. Shrove is the past tense of the English verb shrive, which means to hear a confession, assign penance, and absolve sin. Christians who observe Shrove Tuesday consider it a day for penance and soul cleansing. During the Middle Ages, in order to enter the penitential season in the right spirit, especially in northern Europe and England, it became the custom to make this confession on the day before Ash Wednesday.
